Program in Developmental Biology Annual Retreat

Friday - Saturday, December 1-2, 2006

The UCSF Developmental Biology Program retreat will be held from Tomales Bay at the Marconi Conference Center. A unit of the California State Park System, Marconi offers modern facilities located in a beautiful, secluded environment and is surrounded by areas of natural and historical interest. The center is located about 1 1/2 hours north of San Francisco on Highway One. The Developmental Biology Retreat is one of the major program activities of the year.

The retreat provides an opportunity for program members to meet together in a casual and focused setting to interact and discuss their current work. There will be a general overview and one research talk from each lab, given by faculty and postdocs.

In addition, there will be a Friday evening keynote presented by Susan McConnell from the Department of Biological Sciences at Stanford University, followed by a poster session and social time. Dr. McConnell's talk is entitled "Assembling a neural circuit: wiring up the brain during development."

For questions, please contact the Retreat Coordinator, Caroline Murphy at caroline.murphy@ucsf.edu or (415) 476-2699.

Registration Information:

The Program in Developmental Biology retreat is open to faculty, students and postdocs from Program labs as well as first year PIBS and BMS students. Registration materials have been sent directly to Program faculty. Participants should sign-up for the retreat (through their PI) by November 15 . The form can be downloaded here (Basic Reg Form Download).

First year PIBS and BMS students are not charged and therefore have a different form. It can downloaded here (1st year Student Reg Form Download).

Non-program members may attend the retreat on a space available basis and should sign-up by the November 15 deadline.

The retreat cost will be approximately $135 per person, and will be recharged to the account and fund provided on the registration form. The cost will be determined by dividing the total cost of the retreat by the total number of people attending.

Marconi Conference Center Directions and Information:

Schedule information for the Dec 1-2, 2006 retreat is still pending but the retreat start and end time are about right. A list of speakers is below.

Schedule: Start time will be 2:15 Friday and will end by 1pm on Saturday. Download schedule pending.

Session Chairs: A faculty chair will be assigned to each session. The session Chair should announce the start of the session, keep the talks on schedule, introduce the speakers and moderate the discussion. We will have a timer available.

Speaker Guidelines: Each lab will be allowed 30 minutes total for it's presentation and most lab's presentation should be in two parts. First, the PI will present a short overview of the work going on in the lab. Second, a PI, postdoc, or student will give a talk on a specific research project. The most common allowance for each part is: 10 minutes for the overview, 15 minutes for the specific research project and 5 minutes for questions. However, you can divide up the time anyway you like, or even have a single speaker and research topic, as long as you stay within your allotted time slot. If the PI is unable to attend, the time slot will be reduced to 20 minutes.

An LCD projector for Powerpoint presentations will be provided for speakers. Other AV equipment (VCR, laptop, overhead projector, slide projector) will NOT be available unless specifically requested.
